CCP followed up the detailed blog on boosts with an even bigger one – EVE Free to Play, coming in November.
The initial pass / details are there. If in the unlikely event you are not already aware of it, go read it now. It has the capacity to stir the EVE pot.
I’ve read it. I’ve read some of the early commentators. I’ve read some of the early commenters.
I think the concept is good.
I think some current EVE players will game the crap out of it – requiring CCP to close loopholes and exploits. (Starting with the obvious ones they somehow don’t think will be a problem.)
I expect there would be a spike in these new free to play players – but moving forward I am not sure it will be a great deal more than those currently using trials.
I could see a slight uptick in people subscribing or buying PLEX, but not a great deal more than already do from Trial accounts. This doesn’t change EVE game play.
I suspect there will be a lot of old players who use it to come back to check things out more regularly, which might translate into more people re-subscribing. This will be offset by people who would have re-subscribed for a month and will now not bother to.
So – unless the new player experience changes, I am guessing we will only see a small increase in subscribers, and a mild increase in the day to day population.
With a bit of luck I am wrong, and there will be a flood of new people who stick around New Eden for longer than they do now. We will see.
